We Bid Farewell to President and Sister Condie

spencer j and dorthea condieNauvoo is a city of changes……especially in the church. This week, after three years of faithful service, we bid farewell to our beloved Nauvoo Temple President, Spencer J. Condie and his wonderful wife, Temple Matron Dorthea Condie.

President Condie, an Emeritus member of the First Quorum of the Seventy, has a way of making you feel like you’re the most important person in the world. I have watched him with children, young men and women, newlyweds, temple workers, missionaries, Apostles, and other General Authorities. He was always the same…..kind, loving, always giving a happy compliment plus frequently displaying an extremely well developed sense of humor, usually aimed at himself.

His sweet wife, whom he always called ‘Angel’, always seemed to just glow. I remember one of her talks in a Stake Conference where she proclaimed, “I love the feeling of the Spirit.” It was always abundant when we were in her presence.

As I was leaving the temple last week, I noticed President Condie standing in front of his office.  We confirmed our photo session and as I turned to leave his office I told him that Jeanette and I had grown to love them very much and that we would surely miss them. I teared up a bit and he just put his arm around me as we walked down the hall and told me, “God bless you!”. I knew I was in the presence of greatness. (He would be unhappy I would say such a thing!)

The day I shot this farewell photo session I rode down to the Nauvoo Flats with them for a quick visit at the Lands and Records building. During our short trip, President Condie stopped numerous times to bid farewell to friends and fellow temple workers. He left them all with a kind word and well placed joke. The love and admiration they displayed for the Condies was very moving.

We know we will love our new Temple President but the Condies will forever hold a sweet and sacred place in our hearts. President and Sister Condie……..God be with you ’till we meet again.

Want to be Uplifted? Watch Tom’s Nauvoo Slideshow

nauvoo lds temple joseph and hyrum statueSometimes life gets a little hectic and we need a few minutes to relax and unwind. Maybe we just need a few minutes to close our eyes to help us refocus. Or maybe we need a special something to lift our weary souls to a higher plane.

We have just that special something for days when relaxing, refocusing, or lifting is needed. Take a few minutes (ok, maybe 9 minutes and 41 seconds) to watch a little video / slideshow Tom put together a few years ago with some of his (then) favorite images of Nauvoo.

Many comments from viewers have included words like “inspiring”, “calming”, and “beautiful”. Some have said the video brought a peaceful spirit into their home. I could go on and on but you know what they say…..”a picture is worth a thousand words”. Describing this video would take more than a thousand.

So, sit back, relax and prepare to be uplifted. It’s not magic……but sometimes it sure feels like it is.

Welcome to “Nauvoo Images”!

wagon in historic nauvooWe hit the one year mark of living in Nauvoo during the last week of the Nauvoo Pageant…..and looking back over the events of the last year have left me feeling awestruck and humbled to say the least. I have intended to get our “Nauvoo Images” blog up and running since last fall and am just now accomplishing that task.

There is no way to adequately write about or even show photos of the last year that wouldn’t take forever for you to sift through them all….and probably bore you after the first 300 photos, so I won’t even attempt to chronicle the last year.

However, we will be posting stuff from the 2013 Nauvoo Pageant, YPM’s, Bag Pipers Band, Brass Band and more for the next few weeks with photos of some of our friends from past years as well as new ones made this pageant season…….all of whom hold very special places in our hearts.

We will also begin posting about Nauvoo events as they come along and take you on the ride we had while spending an entire year in Nauvoo. For such a small little town in the Midwest, there’s always something going on in Nauvoo or one of the little towns nearby.

Hope you enjoy the ride with us. We promise……we’ll make room in the wagon for you……
